The hostess
- Let's meet them in the studio.
Joensuu, autumn 1986
Is it true that you couldn't find big enough equipment in Finland, so you had to order them outside Finland?
- Yes. We ordered the equipment in December. It took several months and we still haven't received everything that we ordered. But they'll come soon. We have waited them for nine months now.
Tarot, autumn 1987
Have you now received all your equipment?
- Yes, at last.
Marco Hietala, Tarot
- When we started the band, no one else dared to sing, so I became the singer. And because we are a metal band, I became a metal singer.
Isn't it difficult to sing that kind of music? Doesn't it affect to your voice? It's quite hard.
- Yes, it's really hard. I say it honestly. So if you want to be a metal singer, you have to train a lot. When I was in a music high school in Kuopio, I practised voice formation, although it didn't prepare me to sing this genre. Nevertheless, I learned something about breathing technique etc.
Dan Tigerstedt, recorder/producer
You've worked with many people. What's the difference between recording heavy metal and pop music? Does this get on your nerves more often?
- No, I never lose my nerves. It's a requirement in this occupation.
Someone wise has said that there are 100,000 different ways to mix music and they're all wrong. What makes it so difficult to mix an album?
- I wouldn't say that they're all wrong. I think that they are all correct. When you start to mix the album, everything is already recorded and you just balance the instruments and singing. Our machine has 24 channels and we also add echo and other effects. The final mix is always a personal choice. You could compare it to mixing 24 different colours. Every person would do it in their own way.
Many Finnish bands record their albums in foreign countries. What's wrong with Finnish studios? Or is it just fashion?
- I've discussed with musicians who have recorded music outside Finland, and I've understood that it helps them concentrate on the music. It would be more difficult to concentrate if you record the album near your home where you have to spend a lot of time meeting your friends and TV reporters *laughter*.
Marco sings
Eulalia Tötterström, a lady from Böle (fictional character)
- Do you have to yell all the time? I understand that sometimes you have to yell, but why do they yell all the time?
Taina Räisänen, a singing teacher (not Marco's)
What do you think about Marco's singing?
- I think that Marco has studied voice formation. He doesn't stress his vocal chords as much as typical rock singers. You can hear that he uses also other muscles than only the muscles of larynx. His voice isn't ruined. He seems to have a good voice. And one very good thing is that he pronounces the lyrics clearly, which is quite rare nowadays.
Eulalia Tötterström
- Although these are bad times, the music is good. When I was young, we only had songs like Hummani hei and Punertaa marjat pihlajan. Yuck.
