Indica's Jonsu and Heini are now sitting next to me. Good afternoon.
H: Good afternoon, or actually good evening.
Yeah, it's an evening indeed, although the Sun is still shining here in Särkänniemi. These are exciting times for your band. Could you tell us what you have done recently?
H: We've been travelling all over Europe and had promotion concerts on radio.
J: Yep, all kinds of crazy things.
And you have a good reason for all those crazy things, because you've made a contract with the multinational record company Nuclear Blast.
H: Yes. We got, or made, a contract with them in autumn and I have to say that they are awesome people. We've had a good time.
And they aren't keeping a low profile. Here's a citation of Markus Staiger, the chief of Nuclear Blast: "If everything goes well, within five years Indica will be one of the biggest bands in the world and will sell 20 million albums." This is a direct quote. What do you think about these comments?
H: He has totally underrated us. We'll sell 40 million albums in that time. *laughs*
J: True. Apparently my involvement in this interview is just to say "true" or "yep".
So you just agree with Heini on everything?
J: Heini is so smart that I don't have to speak anymore.
H: Just sit quietly and try to look pretty.
*Jonsu tries to stay still and smile*
I also always try to do that.
The record company has invested a lot of money for your promotion, half a million euros. (
:shok
Does it make your legs wobble?
J: No it doesn't. I already used the money and bought a horse and two small ponies. I moved to a countryside (actually she moved from Helsinki to Espoo which is another city next to Helsinki) and I have them there. Welcome for a visit.
Okay. Apparently you have lost your minds during the interview. That's great. Markus Staiger seems to be an interesting person. He has kept a speech in Finnish, although he's a German who doesn't apparently understand Finnish at all. But he read it from a paper to a non-Finnish audience and said in the speech that if they don't buy the album, he'll kill them.
H: Would he kill us or the audience?
Not you, hopefully. I think that he meant the audience.
H: Oh God, that guy is crazy.
J: The human population is growing all the time and maybe this is Markus's way to solve the problem, unless you all buy our album. You should buy A Way Away. It's a very good album!
So Markus Staiger, the chief of the big record company seems to be, how to say it nicely, insane?
H: He's passionate, let's put it in this way.
J: Yeah. It's nice that the boys are so excited.
Okay. That's thanks to you. But there is this problem that when a popular Finnish band switches to English, so far none of them have succeeded well in the history of Finland, never, ever. Are you worried about that?
H: Well, I don't know. It may happen to us too. In that case we would return to Finland and continue working here in the same way as earlier. It's not that serious.
J: Besides, Heini, if you haven't noticed during these six years, we have already lost our reputation in Finland.
H: That's true. We live in a forest and have nothing to lose. *grins*
Yeah. And it took only about ten years for Neljä Ruusua before the audience forgot 4R and Loving the Alien. Can you wait that long if you screw it all?
H: Yes, easily.
Okay. You have performed in Berlin and all over Europe, such as in Italy and France. What kind of a reception have you had abroad?
J: Very good and positive. Our European tour begins in autumn, but we will definitely play in Finland too. We love Finnish villages more than anything.
And Heini has nothing to add? Okay. I've heard about an interesting foreign review. Slovenian Playboy gave your A Way Away album four bunnies out of five, didn't it?
J: Yes. At that point I knew that we are on top of the world. Now we can only go down, unless we’ll get next year five bunnies out of five and an invitation to pose as centrefold.
I was coming to this. Which one of you girls would be ready to pose as centrefold?
J & H: This one is easy.
H: Sirkku would probably do it.
J: Yeah. Sirkku, if you are watching this on the backstage, get ready to... Sorry, this is a family program, so I won’t say more.
I'll take this as a promise. Sirkku is Indica's keyboardist, isn't she?
H: Yes she is.
That’s great. We're looking forward to it, Sirkku. Thank you for the interview.
