Anette Olzon meets the A-team
Interviewer: No, but look! It works perfectly with that piercing of yours
Anette agrees and says that it is important since everybody sees her. It is the radio after all and then you have to look good.
I: We actually have with us today Nightwish lead singer Anette Olzon *round of applause*
I: How are you doing? You said that you were a bit tired now when you are in Finland, that it has something to do with the air?
A: Yes, it is the air. We don't have any air in Skåne, where I live. We're too close to Danmark.
I: So there is more air in Finland?
A: Yes, there is many more forests and so on. We just have a lot of fields and and farmers with pig pee and so on. :p
I: And a bridge!
A: Yes, and it is really great. (It's the Öresundsbron they are referring too. It connect Sweden with Danmark You can travel from Malmö directly to Copenhagen)
I: You have had a completely fantastic long tour and it is soon to be over. What are your feelings towards that? On saturday, after the show, will you be on spring vacation our autumn break?
A: I don't think there will be any summer vacation no. I won't rest completely.
I: But how are your feelings now towards the last gig. You have played 196 gigs.
A: It feels pretty good. Of course it will feel strange, but it feels good to take a break.
I: What is the first thing you will do when you are free?
A: *phew* Well, we will have a huge party on sunday. The worlds biggest party! I will party *yeey*
I: So how is it on tour? How is it with drinking and smoking? Do you join the guys on the partys?
A: No, I never party. I always go straight to bed and asleep.
(So they continue talking about the party on Sunday for a while, and one of the interviews ask what dance moves that are in at the moment among the NW people. )
A:*laughs* Well, just look at me on stage for that! I just jump around like a jumping fool. I'm totally crazy and don't think for a moment what I'm doing. I just do it and look weird. I love to dance. I go to dance classes and so on.
I: We have a rockring here in the studio (you know that circle that you swing around with your hips), can you handle that too?
A: No, no. I'm not a belly dancer.
I: So no Beyoncé moves?
A: No, more like "halo" moves.
I: So how are the crowd dancing then?
A: Oh, but that is more headbanging from them *show horns and says Hep, hep.
I: So it's hard to get inspiration to new dance moves then?
A:No, but I do my thing, and just go with my pop cute style, and then the guys can look supercool. I tried to headbang during the first gigs, butI have problems with my neck so that didn't turn out too well.
I:So just how old are you did you say? *jokes around and talks in a weird voice* - I can't be around to drink and smoke... and I have neck pains as well!
A: I'm actually 38, so I think I have a bit right to be a bit tired. I have lived for a pretty long time.
I: So how is it going with the Finnish language?
A:*sighs* It hasn't gone too well. The language is so weird. I sang for a couple of weeks ago at a Finnish festival in Stockholm because I wanted to celebrate the country. I have a Finnish boyfriend and he has told me a thousand times how to pronounce the words right "no it sounds like this!!" , and I'm just... *sigh* The H is just completely hopeless because it doesn't exist in the Swedish language. But I actually felt that I did pretty good, even though I got some comments about it. But many Finnish people thought I did really well.
I: Given the conditions, and the neck...
A: But really the neck is a problem. I go to the chiropractor and everything.
I: is it some sort of a whiplash wound or something?
A:I don't know at all. It all started when I went to a chiropractor, when I was about 20 and after that it has just continue. I just think I have a bad neck. I would like to headbang, it's cozy. But then after second thought, I have seen the guys in Pain, who headbangs like crazy on stage, how much pain they are in the morning after. I don't believe that it's good for the head at all and that it's plain dangerous and that the risk for stroke becomes much greater. They are free to do it,but I want to live until I'm 105 so that's also why I don't drink or smoke at all and live really healthy. Maybe I can die in three years but at least I want to try.
(She then talks about being a vegetarian, and we have read in her blog that it didn't work for her, so I skip that part. )
After that they have a little battle, to see who can speak the best Finnish and hold up a little conversation. It doesn't go too well but Anette wins by saying "Vittu".
I: Beaten out with the word Vittu...
A: Well, what can I say..
I: So is it like that? Do you feel you have to fake a more rough lifestyle than what you really have?
A:Well, I know that I got a review from the concert at Metal town, in the paper Aftonbladet. They wrote that I looked like a cake baking Madicken( a story figure by the writer Astrid Lindgren) mum. I looked too nice on stage, waving and so on. I sighed when hearing that and the guys said: You have to find some more attitude...
And I'm really trying, but I am a nice person and it's hard to be cool then I think.
I: But do someone have to be so cool in order to play in Nightwish?
A:No.. no. I actually find that comment about being a cake baking mum accomplishment. I am a Madicken mum, and I want to live in a Madicken house. I think it's cute.
I: You have a cute nickname in Finland as well, "Arska".
A: Yeah, I name myself that as well. I think it's sweet.
I: Who is that has given you that name?
A:It was the boys, who gave to me during the time when my name hadn't been revealed yet. So if there was a party they said: And Arska is coming too.
I: So you like it?
A: Yeah, I like it. But I have found it's many men that is named like that.
I: Yeah, Arska means like "Angry". Like a big worker of some sort. Arnold Schwarzenegger is called "Arska".
A: But I am actually a bit rough. The boys don't have an easy time with me. I am a woman, but I'm a pretty stern woman.
I: Speaking on that, how is it working with the boys on tour?
A:Yeah, it's going pretty well. I have become much nicer against them. I was pretty harsh in the beginning. I complained a lot at them and told them constantly to stop smoking.
I: Did they smoke inside the bus?
A: Of course. It's Finns we are talking about! Hello... are there any rules for Finnish people at all? No... *laughs* If there is a smoking forbidden sign... oh, yeah let's smoke even more! I'm such a legal following woman. If it stands "do not touch the button", I don't. I don't know if it's very Swedish, but it feels like that.
In a coca cola commercial, there was a guy sitting next to a red button. And of course he press it and is over flowed with coca cola bottles. I would never do that! I would just sit there and looking scared at the button.
