Rock One Interview: January 2009
Hello Kitee
If there was only allowed to be one, Nightwish would of course be the band the most representative of Finland. The 5 from Kitee are no doubt making their fellow citizens proud, thanks to their worldwide success and a journey without faults. Whilst waiting for their 2 concerts on the 23rd and 24th of March at the Zenith in Paris, Tuomas, head of the group, gives up some of his time for us.
The year which has just passed has been very packed for Nightwish…
Tuomas: That’s the least that could be said. We have gone through many highs, lows, and all that is possible in between the 2, but it has been a very gratifying year. We have played many great shows, most notably in Mexico, which was incredible. Now we are taking a 3 month break, which I think we all need. We will return to the European roads for a tour which will start on the 11th of March in London. But it really feels good to be at home.
The last time we saw you, you had played at the Zenith, you will return in March to play 2 dates there again…
Tuomas: It’s flattering! We hope there will be many people there, it’s the sort of thing which surprises us a lot. We never enter something thinking it will be amazing. If someone has confidence in us, then it’s good. *laughs* We hope there will be enough people to fill the second show.
What progress have Nightwish known over the course of the tour in other countries of the world?
Tuomas: It’s quite funny, since in certain countries we sell more CDs and more concert tickets. That’s the case in France, Austria, Switzerland and Finland too. In other countries, we don’t sell as well, but it’s just the way things are and it isn’t surprising since it reflects the current situation in music. In South America, we have not had as many people as on the previous tour, but there isn’t any need to complain.
In going through many countries, you must mix with many different cultures…
Tuomas: Yes, of course. It’s what I like best in doing this whole thing, being able to get around the whole word and exploring the 4 corners of the planet, from Australia to France, whilst passing through Finland, the US and South America. I don’t bore myself. I see well the cultural differences between people, but also the common points since all our fans have a common passion, and the same loyalty towards us.
Do you ever get scared when arriving in a town for the first time?
Tuomas: Oh, I am even scared in areas which I know, it doesn’t change much. Nothing is ever acquired, we always need to have butterflies in our stomachs before playing.
Are you the kind of person who is always happy to leave on the roads of Europe or elsewhere?
Tuomas: A bit, yes. Especially in Europe rather than elsewhere, since we have our oldest fans here, those who have followed us for the longest. I try to find unique and different moments in each experience. I could not be on tour all the time, but after 3 months at home, I know I’ll be very happy to return to touring. When I make an album, I spend 1 year in the studio, which is great but when leaving (the studio), I always want to set off again. And very honestly, we came back very tired from our last tour, whether it was the band or the crew, I don’t think we could have made it another month without a long break. We aren’t machines, just human beings. We should take care of ourselves before everything. And in this work, like in all jobs, there are moments which are tiresome or where we don’t feel like doing anything, like the rest of the world.
This is even more true for Nightwish, since they are perfectionists on stage…
Tuomas: Yes, it is a bit like that: you walk onto stage and produce the same gestures every night, it wears you out. You are pressurized mentally and physically, but it remains the best job in the world. I wouldn’t change anything.
What do you like the most and the least about being on the road?
Tuomas: What I like the most by a long shot is the concerts; spending an hour and a half on stage, being able to play the music which I love and watching people respond, it’s always extraordinary. The worst is the resting, the journeys, waking up early, social pressure, and being far away from home for a long-time.
Do you have the impression that after each tour, you return home stronger than before, due to all that you gain during the tours?
Tuomas: I always return home a lot richer in terms of experiences, but each time, I return very depressed, its something which many musicians go through. When you return everything is good, you have had a great tour, you are happy, but so depressed that you cannot doing anything for 2 or 3 days, I don’t want to see anybody, but I also don’t want to be alone either, it’s a time where your life goes back to normal, so it does demand a transition. I always feel better after a few days, but it really is a very strange feeling.
Does the success of Nightwish create pressure or inspiration for you?
Tuomas: Mostly inspiration, I’m not scared. And even if the success lowered, nothing would change for me, it’s inspiring since I am already working on the new album and I am getting very impatient to start work on it properly, recording songs and entering the studio. I already have many exciting ideas, I am already starting to know what the album will be like and I am feeling urgent since for me, the success is already here: writing exciting things.
Does this success give you confidence?
Tuomas: Yes, absolutely, it’s a very good feeling to tell me: “Okay, for the first time, something is going really well in my life, so maybe I can continue”
Is it important for you that the next album follows the success of ‘Dark Passion Play’?
Tuomas: To be truthful, not really. I only want it to be just as good artistically, but the music industry and the world are so strange that you can never know if an album will sell well, or what is going to happen to the band. I just hope that we are capable of making an album just as good as ‘Dark Passion Play’, that’s all we are interested in at the moment. Also, it’s the success of the CD which has brought us the financial security which will allow us to make this album without compromising anything. We could hire an orchestra or a choir for as long as necessary, we won’t have to worry about money. It’s a huge relief.
When writing, do you feel the need to not think about everything which happens outside of Nightwish?
Tuomas: Yes, I try really hard to isolate myself from that, from everything. When I write songs, I don’t even think about the other members of the band, it’s a very selfish process and the only way of keeping it’s honesty. It’s what I’m doing at the moment.
It’s a lonely process which you finish by sharing with the world, your songs, which from the moment they are released, no longer belong to you…
Tuomas: It’s exactly that. You know, it’s sometimes a source of inner conflict since the songs and the lyrics are so personal, and aren’t so much anymore once you give them to thousands of people, when you share them with the world. Each time I do a show and I see these people recognising and living my songs, I feel violated in a way. Even so, it’s a great feeling. It’s the strangest part of the music, I find.
The process of sharing with people maybe makes you feel less alone…
Tuomas: Yes, it’s true. And I hope those who listen to my music feel less alone too.
It’s something which is felt and can’t be explained really…
Tuomas: Exactly, it can’t be explained, there is no need. It’s your job to explain it, not mine. *laughs* It’s like poetry, people explain it, it’s something which I don’t like doing. The important thing is what each song means for you.
You spoke of the new album from Nightwish, can we expect the new one this year?
Tuomas: It will take some time since the idea for the concept is huge, that’s the least we could say, it will take me some time to put into place. I hope to enter the studio sometime in 2010, maybe in the summer, I’m not sure yet. It will take some time, but it will be worth it, we are very excited, especially me. All I can tell you is that it will come, but not straight away!
Is the CD/DVD ‘Made In Hong Kong (and various other places)’ which will be released at the time of the tour, a way to make the fans wait?
Tuomas: Yes, it’s true. It’s not a very important thing, since personally, I hate live CDs, but it’s a small gift for the fans, to promote the European tour. There will be videos and audio from Hong Kong, and also a small documentary.
Can we expect some surprises in Paris, on the 23rd and 24th of March?
Tuomas: There will be some, yes. We’re still thinking about it, we have quite a few ideas. Of course we will change the set list, for the public, for also for our own enjoyment. I’m not sure if we will play songs like ‘Nemo’ or ‘Wishmaster’. There will be some new things visually. We can’t wait to start!
