The Islander is nominated for the Muuvi 2009 (Finnish music video competition). The director Stobe Harju described the video in the interview* and here's the translation:
At first we in the production team didn't know which song we are going to film. We just knew that about half of the budget comes from Rovaniemi and the other half from Nightwish. When I met Tuomas Holopainen, he told me that we should find a nice scenery from Lapland that has something Finnish and something Irish. Then he played me The Islander and we both were like "wow, this song really suits to Lapland". It has nice yoga drums or whatever they are called. It was nice to realize that the song sounds so Finnish.
In this video we wanted to go back to the roots of Nightwish: the band playing at the bonfire and telling a story. The story is about an old lighthouse keeper who has experienced everything and has no longer a reason to live. In the end he stands on the crag and we all know what happens next. The story includes a bit corny or touching idea that when you pass away something grows to that location. There are five trees in the video that symbolize five family members who have past away. And when the lighthouse keeper dies, something nice grows to that location.
Nowadays music videos are mostly done in the studio, but you can also go to film in the Finnish nature and find places that are considered exotic in other countries. One of the exotic places is this kind of rocky hill that's typical in Lapland. I've heard that someone in Japan has watched this video and wet his/her pants wondering if this place actually exists in Finland.
In my opinion, the three hardest places in the world to shoot a music video are:
#1 the bottom of the Pacific Ocean
#2 the top of Mount Everest
#3 the peak of Vammavaara in Rovaniemi
The place is so rocky that moving one meter takes one minute. This is one of the most difficult music video productions ever done in Finland. And the result is completely marvelous. So I would like to appeal to the judges of Muuvi 2009 that making this video was so difficult that please give us that damn reward.
