Nightwish Speak Out About Vocalist Problems


Nightwish’s Tuomas Holopainen has admitted that vocalist Anette Olzen “might not be able to handle” the pressures of being in the band.

In an exclusive interview with Classic Rock’s Dave Ling, Tumoas Holopainen has admitted that there have been signs of tension that are beginning to form within the band.


The Dark Passion Play tour began in October 2007. Is the finish line in sight?

Tumoas Holopainen: “It’s on the far horizon, maybe. There’s only another five months to go. It’s been the band’s longest and most exhausting tour; a real rollercoaster ride.”

By that you must mean Anette bursting into tears and walking off stage at a gig in Brazil last November, later claiming in an interview that “the stress and bad vibe within the band had reached a boiling point”?

Holopainen: “Yes, but I disagree about the bad vibe part. It was a combination of many different things. Everyone was getting along, but the schedule was too hard. The whole band, the technicians, everyone, was on the verge of collapse.”

What was meant by the explanation that Anette was “really not up to this kind of heavy shit right now”?

Holopainen: “She was being affected by a smoke machine, which isn’t great for a singer. There were middle fingers in the front row, and some jerks were screaming the name of our former vocalist (Tarja Turunen). It all kind of closed in on her. But everybody’s relaxed again now. We went home and had three months off the road. As simple as that.”

Did alarm bells ring when, echoing her predecessor, Olzon recently hired a personal manager?

Holopainen: “At the beginning I had a feeling of déjà vu. But when we discussed it I understood that she needs somebody who speaks her own language [Swedish]. Her manager is a very, very reasonable guy.”

How is she handling the fame?

Holopainen: “She has told me a couple of times that she might not be able to handle it, on top of her divorce. I’ve seen her close to collapse and it has scared me, so we are protecting her. There will be no more interviews.”.

Castigo, нет, она идет в связке с предыдущим предложением. Они будут опекать её, не отдавая на растерзание журналистам с их порой бестактными и глупыми вопросами. И плюс, как много интервью с Анетт за всё это время были действительно просто хорошими интервью, а не способом журналов сорвать куш на распроданном тираже и очередным "взрывом событий", по версии сми, в стане Найтвиш? Быть может, сие и к лучшему.

Q: What can you say about next album? ...Is it possible to make it bigger than previous ones, or maybe smaller?
T.H: One has kinda become a slave of "making it bigger"...and still it has never been our intention for its own sake, but...maybe it`s my ambition that has lead to it, but I don`t honestly know about the next album how it will sound, but I do have a clear view about the carrying theme and concept...and...It`s gonna be a sizable piece of work. Or at least that´s the goal.

Q: The difference this time is that you have Anette ready, so you can keep that in mind when making the songs. Does that make it easier?
T.H: Actually, when doing previous album I didn`t know who`s gonna sing them and it was very easy to make, so I don`t think it`s gonna be easier in that way, but of course it`s easier if you know how it`s going to sound. Maybe that opens new windows, but...as stupid as it may sound, the fact you know whos going to sing them doesn`t make it easier, or more difficult.

Q: Finally I have to ask...you let Kotiteollisuus to your home to make their new album. Were you anxious when returning home if the house would be still intact?
T.H: No, I wasn`t anxious a bit. It was a matter of honour to me that they`re making their album in my house...and i have to say...when I returned home..it has never been as well cleaned as it was then

Q: Were there empty bottles?
T.H: Not a single one anywhere. I guess there has been in some point, but when I returned it was cleaned up to max.

Q: So maybe you`d take visitor like that more often....you`d get cleaning to same prize?
T.H: Yes, that`s right.

Q: Could you think of letting some other bands to record at your house also?
T.H: They should be quite good friends, as the members of Kotiteollisuus are, but thinking of it , no other band comes to mind.

What are the UK fans going to see that we haven't seen before?
Tuomas - As it'll be our first show after a 3 month break you'll see slightly scared but refreshed and excited Nightwish. There will be the full light show and pyro, plus a different set-list. We've been playing the same songs for 14 months and the time has come to change things. We're gonna drop Bye Bye Beautiful and in fact we'll probably never play that song again. It's had its time and it just feels really corny to play it now. We're gonna bring some of the older stuff back. [Holly's note - And don't we all know it!! ]

Is that due to fans telling you they want to hear more old stuff?
T - The most important thing is to keep the set-list intersting for yourself. By changing things, you stay inspired and get the right vibes. That is then transferred to the audience and everyone feeds off it. If you play the same songs for weeks on end it becomes routine. We'll always have the same first and last song - that's tradition - but we'll change a lot of the others.

But don't you always open with BBB?
T - Yes, but we're having a five-day rehearsal in a few weeks and then we'll decide what the new opener will be. We've never played the Brixton Academy before but there is a legendary touch to its name, so of course we want to play the best show we possibly can. [Holly's note - And boy, did they play a heck of a show]

How close is the new live album MIHK to the true Nightwish sound?
T - I am positive about how it sounds but I wasn't sure at first because it was the record company's idea, not ours. I actually don't like live albums at all but I was happy with the result. To me, it sounds more like a live EP because for legal reasons we weren't able to include our earlier songs, just ones from Dark Passion Play. That was dissappointing, but I think the best part of it is the tour documentary. You will see how exhausted we got and how close we came to actually cracking up and checking into a mental hospital. There is plenty of hilarity also, so you'll see both sides.

Will the day come when you won't play anything from you Tarja-fronted era?
T - It's not something I've contemplated. I don't see any reason why we should stop playing the old material. Some of the songs have actually been reborn since Anette joined the band. For example, Sacrament of Wilderness and Ever Dream sound different now, but at the same time they sound refreshed. I think we'll keep doing older songs in the set for as long as we can do shows.

Pain are supporting you once more in London - you must really like touring with them?
T - I like Pain's music but I definetly like the people. When we choose support acts, the most important thing is that we can get along with them, and it certainly helps if we like the music. Pain are the perfect package in that sense and the same applies for the other band that are touring with us, Indica. I can say the same for Paradise Lost when we toured with them - great band, great people.

Do you ever wake up on long tours like this and wonder where the hell you are?
T - All the time. I don't use drugs but I imagine this is what it'd be like. You wake up in this surreal world that doesn't quite make sense. You go where they tell you to go and it's hard to make sense of what time is and where you actually are. The tour is still going on - we'll do about 10 festival shows in Europe this summer and carry on until September when we finally start making our new album. I feel like my head is exploding with ideas for it!

"The Mother who is becoming a bigger and bigger star"

She went from a baking biscuits supermum home in Påarp to be a rockstar in front of thousands fans. For about 18 months has Anette Olzon toured with Nightwish.

It wasn't an easy task to replace Tarja Turunen, Nightwish frontsinger for five years (Eh, okay research please! It's 9 years! - прим. переводчика one_with_the_waves с оф форума). The expectations were sky high when Anette Olzon was presented as the new Nightwish singer.
- When thousands of people have payed money to see me, I want to do a good job. I'm very self critical and even if the crowd enjoys the shows, I still have a hard time to feel pleased if not everything went perfect.
The last months she has enjoyed her time off and being on vacation for the first time in a very long time. The time has she spent with being a mother to her son. It has been alot of family life in the house in Påarp. Since a couple of days ago she's back on tour. An amount of 30 shows is left of the bands two year old tour.
-It's always hard to leave home. But now I can see an end of the tunnel this time. This time my son wasn't either so sad to see me leave. I think he's starting to understand that this is my job now. What I'm afraid of is that he's going to be angry with me later and wonder why I'm not like the other mothers.

The first year was the hardest for the band. Anette had the worst time because she had to convince the fans that she was a proper replacement.
The first test already came after a few months when Nightwish sixth album "Dark Passion Play" was released. The album had been recorded in biggest secretive spirit and the only track that the fans had heard her with was "Amaranth" which had been released a month earlier. Except for a couple of mean comments was the reception positive. The band won four catagories at the Emmaa Gaala, for example "Best band" and "Best album".
-It was an incredible relief. Nightwish are heroes in Finland and it was the finnish fans reaction I was most anxious about.

She still remembers the first days media chaos. Photographers from Finlands biggest evening post was hiding in the bushes outside the house in Påarp and a suprised Anette found pictures of her cat in the finnish magazines.
- It isn't possible to prepare for what is going to happen when you accept this type of job. It really as far away from office work as you can come.

When she's free the first thing she miss is the band collegues.
- We have toured together for so long now. I think that Nightwish has becomed much more of a group since I arrived, and I have gotten used to to have the boys around me even though we don't spend time together all the time. They have their interests and I mine, shopping for example I have to do by myself. They rather want to play poker in the tourbus.
It has taken time to grow into the role as a rockstar. Nightwish has hundred of thousands of fans all over the world. The biggest hysteria is in South America where the bands latest live DVD "Made In Hong Kong" is recorded [гм-гм, человек, писавший эту статью, чрезвычайно "осведомлен". In that country the hotel staff is knocking on your door in the middle of the night asking for autographs, and the fans are waiting outside the hotel until four in the morning.
- It was very hard in the beginning, I almost got panic attacks. Then I could run away and answer grumpily when I wanted to be alone. I still don't like when the fans come forward and pinch my cheeks, but I have learned how to handle it. And I understand the fans. They get to meet their biggest idols and of course they get a bit crazy then.

In a cut from the live dvd where the five band members wait to enter the stage, is the enormous pressure noticable.
- It's hard to describe the feeling of how to stand there, its both nervous and filled with excitement. When the public later sing along at the concert they almost sing louder than me.
When she comes back to Sweden in August she doesn't live in Påarp any longer. The house is on sale and she has already bought an apartment in Helsingborg.
- I'm going to begin to move in during the tour, which means that I'm going to live with unhanged curtains for moths before I'm able to settle in.

"It was a small stage and when I entered it I got the smoke machine in my face. I easily get dry mucous membrane and if I get smoke on my vocal chords I in the end loose my voice. When I started to sing I noticed I couldn't take certain notes. We had toured for months in a row, everybody was tired, and I just felt I couldn't do it.

Было нелегко заменить Тарью Турунен, бывшую вокалисткой Nightwish в течение 9-ти лет. Ожидания от Анетт как от новой фронтледи группы, были чрезвычайно высоки.

- Когда тысячи людей заплатили деньги, чтобы увидеть меня, мне хочется выполнить свою работу хорошо. Я очень самокритична, и даже если зрители наслаждаются концертом, мне все равно тяжело чувствовать то же, что и они, если не всё прошло так уж гладко и совершенно.

Последние несколько месяцев она была предоставлена сама себе и впервые за очень долгое время получила возможность отдохнуть. Имевшееся в её распоряжении время она провела, будучи матерью для своего сына. Так что дом в Påarp был настоящим семейным очагом. Спустя несколько дней она снова вернется к жизни в туре. Группе осталось отыграть около 30-ти концертов из всего того множества, что было включено в расписание двухлетнего тура.

- Очень тяжело покидать свой дом. Но на этот раз конец тоннеля виден как никогда. Теперь мой сын спокойней отнесся к тому, что я снова уезжаю. Думаю, он начинает понимать, что теперь такова моя работа. Однако я побаиваюсь, что позже он будет злиться на меня и удивляться, почему я не такая, как все остальные мамы.

Первый год был самым сложным для группы. Анетт пришлось хуже всех, так как ей предстояло убедить поклонников в том, что она является достойной заменой. Первая «проба» состоялась через несколько месяцев после аннонсирования новой вокалистки, когда вышел шестой по счету альбом Nightwish “Dark Passion Play”. Он записывался в очень замкнутой атмосфере, и единственной песней, в которой поклонники имели возможность услышать Анетт, был “Amaranth", вышедший месяцем ранее в качестве сингла. За исключением нескольких едких комментариев, реакция в целом была положительной. Группа получила награды Emma Gaala в четырех номинациях, например, как «Лучшая группа» и «Лучший альбом».

- Это было невероятным облегчением. Nightwish настоящие герои Финляндии, и больше всего я волновалась за реакцию именно финских поклонников.

Анетт до сих пор помнит тот хаос, что устраивали СМИ в самом начале. Фотографы из крупнейшего финского вечернего издания прятались в кустах возле домика в Påarp, и удивленная Анетт вскорости обнаруживала в финских журналах фотографии ее кота.

- Невозможно подготовиться к тому, что будет происходить с тобой, как только ты возьмешься за такую работу. Это действительно настолько далеко от офисной работы, насколько только можно зайти.

Когда она на каникулах, она скучает по своим коллегам.
- Мы так долго вместе ездили по миру. Мне кажется, что Nightwish стали группой намного больше с того момента, как я присоединилась к ним, и я привыкла к тому, что теперь ребята рядом со мной, хоть мы и не проводим вместе всё наше время. У них свои интересы, а у меня свои, например, за покупками я отправляюсь одна, а они предпочитают поиграть в покер в тур-автобусе.

Потребовалось некоторое время, чтобы свыкнуться с ролью рок-звезды. У Nightwish сотни тысяч поклонников по всему миру. Мне до сих пор не нравится, когда поклонники подбегают ко мне и начинают пощипывать меня за щеки, но я научилась справляться с этим. И я понимаю поклонников. Они встречают своих самых больших кумиров и, конечно же, становятся из-за этого немного сумасшедшими.

В отрывке из DVD, на котором запечатлено, как пятеро участников группы ждут своего выхода на сцену, ощущается чудовищное напряжение.

- Сложно описать ощущения от того, каково это, стоять там, в состоянии одновременно нервном и полном волнения. Когда немногим позже зрители подпевают, то делают это зачастую громче, чем пою я.

Когда в августе Анетт вернется в Швецию, она больше не будет жить в Påarp. Дом выставлен на продажу, а Анетт уже купила жилье в Гельсингборге.
- Я собираюсь начать переезд во время тура, а это означает, что пройдут месяцы, прежде чем у меня появится возможность окончательно переехать и повесить занавески на окна.

«Ты в курсе того, куда ты направляешься, однако твое время тебе не принадлежит: внезапно тебе сообщают, что через полчаса у тебя интервью. Мне пришлось развить в себе привычку всегда быть ко всему готовой».

«Там была маленькая сцена, и когда я ступила на нее, то дым-машина оказалась прямо перед моим лицом. Слизистая оболочка очень чувствительна и быстро сохнет, и если я вдыхаю дым, то могу в итоге потерять голос. Когда я начала петь, то заметила, что не могу брать некоторые ноты. К тому же, мы провели в дороге многие месяцы, все очень устали, и я почувствовала, что не смогу допеть».

…следующем шаге с Nightwish:
«Следующей осенью я приму участие в нескольких сторонних проектах, так что то время будет не полностью отдано Nightwish, но уже на весну 2010 года у нас забронирована студия».
