Tarja Turunen in Venezuela
In this interview, we discovered that Tarja is a warm queen of ice, her simplicity and sympathy almost made us forget that we were talking to one of the most important persons of the metal world. As we were asking the questions, we discovered some facets of the artist that we have never imagined, and then her husband, Marcelo Cabuli, told us some interesting details that we will share with you.
How far does Tarja want to go with her career?
As far as I can go, I want to reach the skies. I don't want to set any limits and limitations. I love facing challenges, that's my complete artistic vision of life. I always take risks, try to take the best decisions and try to learn what is the best for me. That's why I'll set the sky as a limit.
How did you decide to be a rock singer, instead of an opera singer for example, because we know you like opera?
Yes, I also like singing opera, but it's not my main interest, I have been singing rock and metal with Nightwish for many years. That's when I started to really appreciate and like metal. I listen to soft rock and classical music. Heavy metal came to my life with Nightwish, I have always liked rock, of course, but the most important thing is that I love what I'm doing and what I can do by combining these styles, I can go to a metal concert and the listen to a symphony in a theater, I love both of them.
Your new album has been very successful in Finland, has it got any special recognition?
Everything has been very nice, I got platinum and Finland, gold in Russia, I am close to getting an award in Germany and there are some countries in Europe where it has sold very well, I am very satisfied about it.
Do you sing Nightwish songs during your concerts?
Yes, I do sing a few of them, I don't think there is any reason why I shouldn't do it, besides I love the Nightwish era because it has been a very important period of my life.
You wrote the song "Oasis", what inspired you to write this song?
It's about my life, it was important to find myself as a human being, because for many years I've been skeptical in my life, as a person, as a woman. So I discovered that it is important to hold healthy things in my mind, as well as healthy thoughts in my heart. I feel well, this is my strength, I think that everyone should find strength in himself and get rid of all this stress around us, it's very important sometimes.
After every storm comes the calm, how does Tarja feel after every storm in her life?
Uff, I had many. My god, it's fantastic! The world is full of surprises, you never know what can happen tomorrow. My life has really been full of surprises in the last ten years and I can say that I feel that I am a very strong woman and when I had to do things on my own, of course with the help of many other people who helped me set up my solo career, I feel good with myself, I feel strong, I feel good about being a woman. I am 33 years old and I'm not a girl anymore.
Your image is very mysterious and enigmatic, but you are very sensitive and sweet when you are singing. How do you see yourself, do you see yourself as a queen of ice?
You know, when we were doing the promotional pictures we were trying to find cold and dramatic, with maybe heavy make-up, also dramatic expressions it was all part of my imagination. I also enjoy designing my own clothes and the people see dramatic things in my dresses, because it's something that I love a lot, the style I'm using goes hand in hand with the music. I try to look as the music inspires me. Your image is very important, it's about 50/50 both your music and the image.
For you, besides your image, it is important to also project magic.
There is no music without magic, and no magic without music.
Your album is divided into three parts: The Dead Boy, The Doll and the Phoenix. The artwork also emphasizes these parts. What is the connection between them? It seems like an opera script, are we right about this?
I like this kind of things, I like acting, I like drama, theater and all these characters. As you can see, the Dead Boy, The Phoenix and the Queen Of Ice are written within the theme of the album. I started by creating a story in my head, with characters only for me, the people can appreciate the photos that i wanted to create in a photoshot, with many different dresses.
This is also how we filmed the video of I Walk Alone, with the same characters, we had a lot of fun doing it but it was done carefully at the same time, the video, the CD booklet, it was all amazing and even though it was teh first time we ever did this, I enjoyed it a lot and I'm very happy about it.
Did you ever feel like a doll in your life?
I am a doll. (laughs) Ok, sometimes we all wish we were a doll, sometimes it would be good to be a doll and don't have any bad feelings anymore.
We have a lot of readers, we are sure that they would want to know if you have any hobbies and which are your beauty rituals.
Beauty rituals are very important, I do a lot of sport at the moment. When a tour is approaching I have to be in a very good condition in order to perform and have a good time, this is my little beauty trick, and drinking enough water. But eventually the most important thing is to feel good about yourself. Every person is different than the others and has a different type of body, skin, the most important thing is to accept how you are and love yourself.
Do you plan to have any children?
Me? Not at the moment, when my biological watch will start ticking, but of course I would love to have children one day
Do you like Paulo Coelho? Have you read any of his books? What kind of books do you like most? Do you have time to read?
Yes, I like Paulo Coelho, I always read when I have time, I have all his books at home and I have read all. I think they are beautiful and that they send powerful messages, I like the way they are written, The Alchemist is a really good book. Some of his books have inspired me.
We read on the internet that your album was inspired by soundtracks, is that true? Do you like movie soundtracks?
Yes, I like movie soundtracks a lot, I have a special place for these CDs, I like to relax listening to them and watching a movie, the music these people create is magnificent and inspiring. I would like to keep this direction for my next album too.
Are you planning a tour for the Latin American people?
Of course! Every day I wait for this to happen soon, I always wait for promoters to contact us. I would really want to go to Venezuela again,
because I've been there for a month and I went to a company to rent cars and traveled the Coast, I liked it a lot, you have a really beautiful country. I was to Los Roques, on those beautiful beaches, it was fantastic, very nice and friendly people. I also went to other places like Caracas, actually I might go there once again and have a concert in August.
What can you say to your fans? Let's see if you can talk in Spanish!
I'll see you soon! I love you all a lot! I want to go, I want to go, I want to go, I want to go!
Additional details have been given exclusively to us by Marcelo Cabuli, her husband, who told us that the beautiful singer also visited Caracas, Coro, Cumana, Puerto la Cruz, Carupano, Rio Caribe, la Peninsula de Paraguana, and Las Roques.
Besides she was very close to breaking her neck and her vertebral column when she fell off a boat when they were on a wild beach. Fortunately it was just a big scare for her.
